I so agree with you on the importance of taking a step back and evaluating your goals to be sure that all the busyness is productive. Thanks for the reminder I needed it this week.

My gut response is to think that she's crazy for serving on six boards. However, knowing nothing about her personal life, day-to-day career/board roles, and her ability to manage it all, who is anyone to judge? Obviously, she is juggling successfully or she wouldn't be rewarded so handsomely. Honestly, while I'm not sure it would be my thing, I stand in awe of her accomplishments. :)

While it is amazing that this individual is serving on 6 boards, my comment would be more along the lines of trying to learn more about her technique. Rather than questioning whether she has a balanced life or whether she is effective on all 6 boards, let's try to learn from what she has accomplished. This is not for every woman, and obviously very few of either gender have accomplished this feat. However, she has accomplished it, and it is amazing. I wonder how she does it, and would love to learn more about how she manages her time and all of the information she must absorb.

I agree with you that everything is negotiable. Never make assumptions about anything -- even what one thinks a particular job might look like in the future. We do have control over how a tasks are executed --No two people do 'partner' the same way. There are no victims here. Only mind traps. Seems we fall into them everyday.

I recently conducted mid year reviews with my staff and this was a big part of the conversations. I really wanted to hit home on the idea of doing their very best in their present jobs in order to get noticed for future job promotions and other opportunities within the company. If possible I would like a copy of the article that you are referring to in your blog. I think there are times we doubt ourselves and its people like you and the other great network that we surround ourselves with that enable us to pick oursevles back up and move forward.

I once knew someone who was in a similar situation and she took on the new position. Over time, it ended up being too much for her and she was forced to leave it, regretfully. She was disappointed, but felt she made the right choice. Could there be any deep-seated feelings that this person has about the company that are surfacing, now that she would be part of the “old person’s network?” No slackers on this team, if you know what I mean. Is she anticipating feelings of disappointment in terms of the usual expectations one has of the new role, but thinking she will not be feeling fulfilled in comparison to the renewed effort she will have to put forth? It sounds like the coaching you did with her was perfect.

Food for thought. Good for you (regarding your schedule), glad you are busy!
